(2/20/21) Tennessee and neighboring states have just endured one of the worst snow and bitterly cold weather events in recent history. Multiple inches of snow, sleet, and ice, combined with at or below zero temperatures and wind chill factors for days, has left the region under a blanket of frozen precipitation.
With warmer temperatures comes the thaw. And then the problems begin.
As a homeowner and/or business owner, be sure to watch for signs of damage that may have been caused by the frigid conditions or damage that may occur as a result of the thaw.
West Tennessee Restoration reminds you that some pipes may have frozen, while others remained operational. Sudden water leaks during a thaw could result in water damage to the foundation, sub-flooring, flooring and even walls or ceilings depending upon the leak location. One way to check for a leak is to turn off all faucets after the thaw, then check your water meter to determine if flow is still occurring. Briefly turn down all TV's, radios, etc. - and listen carefully along the walls and flooring of your home. Watch for suddenly damp areas or bulging in the walls...all obvious indicators of a water leak.
In addition, when water freezes on your roof, along your foundation, concrete areas and other parts of your property...it expands, and only when a thaw occurs does the damage begin to become evident. Some home or business owners may not notice the damage for days or weeks. Be diligent and begin to inspect your property immediately after a thaw for signs of damage. It is not uncommon for melting snow to cause erosion along foundations, resulting in future problems.
Snow and ice along gutters and the roofline can also cause the expansion/cracks/leaking issues that only begin to show up after a winter event. Similarly, some of these problems may not become evident until the next rain, when previously created structural issues are exposed.
Winter weather conditions may be pretty to look at, may be an inconvenience for travel, and may be uncomfortable physically....but they can also be devastating to property.
